  • ORIGINALLY POSTED 12 JANUARY 2011 Google has removed support for the video codec H.264 from it’s popular web browser Google Chrome.  Both Apple and Microsoft heavily favor the video codec, which is under patent.  Google has made it a point to side with Mozilla and Opera in their stance of neutrality and desire for all web technologies to be unencumbered by patent restrictions. “Though H.264 plays an important role in video, as our goal is to enable open innovation, support for the codec will be removed and our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies,” said Mike Jazayeri, a Google product manager, in a blog post. • ORIGINALLY POSTED 30 NOVEMBER 2010 The US military has unveiled a new gun that will assist in it’s efforts against terrorists in the war in Afghanistan.  The XM-25 has been called a ‘game changer’ by the US Army.  Using a laser guidance system, 25mm high explosive rounds can be programmed to detonate directly over a target even if the target is hiding behind a wall. This technology was developed specifically by Richard Audette for the US military.  “The way a soldier operates this is basically find your target, then laze (laser) to it, which gives the range, then you get an adjusted aim point, adjust the fire and pull the trigger.  “Say you’ve lazed out to 543 metres… When you […]

  • ORIGINALLY POSTED 14 NOVEMBER 2010 On Tuesday November 16th 2010, Entertainment Tonight is showing footage from the Green Lantern live action movie starring Ryan Reynolds.  ET is running a TV spot featuring a “first look” preview of clips from the movie.  I really want to be excited for this movie.  I am torn between the desire to see all the cool things the Green Lantern can do in live action, and the realization that it is a daunting task to convey the complexity of the stories on the silver screen. Here’s the teaser: The Green Lantern, as most of you know, is an American (Human) test pilot that receives a green alien ring of intangible power.  This ring can do […]

  • ORIGINALLY POSTED 16 FEB 2011 AT&T text message from 11113020 is legit! I repeat, AT&T text message from 11113020 is NOT a scam! If you have AT&T and would like 1000 free rollover minutes simply text “YES” to 11113020. This may sound crazy and like some kind of scam, but I- Jonathan Nerdtrek have tried it for myself. Not only that, but I spoke with someone at AT&T directly to confirm since I was VERY skeptical. In fact, I refused to respond for 1 week until I had heard back from a specific person at AT&T to make sure it was all kosher. So, if you have an AT&T cell phone go ahead and try it out- text “YES” without […]

  • ORIGINALLY POSTED 4 FEBRUARY 2011 Today I stumbled upon a website I haven’t visited in years.  Since 1996, Cryptome.org has functioned as a repository for information about freedom of speech, cryptography, spying, and surveillance. According to the site: “Cryptome welcomes documents for publication that are prohibited by governments worldwide, in particular material on freedom of expression, privacy, cryptology, dual-use technologies, national security, intelligence, and secret governance—open, secret and classified documents—but not limited to those.” At first glance I found information on a Homeland Security detention facility being build in nearby Tacoma, WA.  After skimming through those supposedly classified documents I went on to read about nuclear fission reactors in China, DOD spy training and Julian Assange.  I’m sure many of you find […]
