  • Where would we be without the games? Angry Birds, Cut The Rope, Peggle? Each one is as unique as they come, but they’re tied together to one simple principle: Cocos2d can make them. Cocos2d is the leading, open-source, royalty-free smartphone game engine. It’s easy to use, community-supported, reliable, mature, and over 1500 mobile iOS games have been published using it! Why is Cocos2D so easy to use? Because you can play a sound effect, animate a flipping sprite, flash some rad custom font, all with just a couple lines of simple, pure Objective C code. No knowledge of OpenGL is required! Rotating, mirroring, parallaxing, scaling, tinting, sliding, jumping, and a Halloween-sackful of other effects are quickly at your fingertips. In […]

  • Recently I have had horrible pain from a tooth which most likely has an abscess located directly beneath the root.  I clench and grind my teeth at night so in the morning I sometimes awaken with a horrible toothache along with a headache and painful jaw to go along with it. For the second time the dentist recommended I have a root canal performed.  Since root canals are not always effective and usually within 5-20 years fail, I wanted a second opinion.  I spent a lot of time doing research online and found that a lot of people find not only pain relief, but a cure with raw garlic.  Although it will keep vampires and your girlfriend or boyfriend away, […]

Utilizing the new HTML5 gdk backend, Gtk+ 3.2 allows you to run GIMP, Gedit, a video editor or anything really, remotely using a web browser. Although still in the development phase NERD TREK will be following this project with great fervor. Currently Gtk+ 3.2 broadway only works in Firefox 4 and does not support keyboard input, dnd, or c&p… yet. Check out this demo by Alexander Larsson:

  • Although many of my players love playing a powerful PC, there is something to be said for the low level RPG adventure. How I came to love the low level adventure probably has roots in my trappings as a child while learning the d&d game. Those basic dnd red books or the keep on the borderlands module, very basic stats with a basic beginning, trying to explain from where your characters hail and then have then die at the hands of the enemy in the first adventure.  Time to roll up some new PCs! Most of the time though I was a fair DM and would let the players make their own choices which would determine if they lived or […]

Obviously, times have changed since then, better graphics, better sound, better experiences. Something else that has changed, is the price of current console and PC games. They are no longer in the realm of $35. Games are routinely $59.99, fairly cost prohibitive for the majority of gamers. Sure, the addition of “Greatest Hits” titles has eased some of the burden of cost, but you have to wait for said game to a) Be well enough to be a greatest hit and b) Wait for […]

The result is marvelous!  Imagine being able to extract each and every miniature cavern the ants have created and […]

Many people of the early 21st century fear mankind may create a form of super-computer that ties itself into a nexus, a network that will be enabled to “go global” and stamp out the inefficient human race.  While I do agree that humans are inefficient compared to robots- from a physical and mathematical perspective – I highly doubt this is how machines will become the forefront of the future.  I do think machines will eventually “take over”, but not the way most people of today believe.  Instead, technological change will be so gradual that it will happen before human eyes with little to no notice.  One […]
