Apple patents “Laser Tag iPhone” technology

ORIGINALLY POSTED 5 NOVEMBER 2010

Apple patents technology for “Interactive Gaming with Co-Located, Networked Direction and Location Aware Devices.”

A newly discovered patent that Apple filed back in 2009 opens up a whole new world of gaming and app creation for developers. Using the iPhone’s gyroscope, accelerometer and GPS, to turn your phone into an aimable device that can communicate with other iPhones that it is pointed at.

One would be able to play a game of Capture the Flag “Halo Style” yet in real life. Imagine knowing the location of all of your team mates via GPS while one side tries to capture the flag (the flag being another iPhone). You could aim your handset at another iPhone and fire akin to “laser tag” back in the day. If that person is hit, an auditory alert goes off and he is taken off your GPS and out of the action. I can already smell the sweet scent of fresh pine needles as my friends and I venture into the woods to play a game we haven’t tried since childhood. The ideas really are limitless and proves that Apple is prepared to take the next step to keep their customers entertained.

What kind of app would you be craving and drooling over with this new technology?
