  • [This is part of a series of articles, the first of which is here] As the weekend continued at Tekkocon 2014, I noticed no shortage of TekkoShodown players but gamers of all types were welcome across the board!   Video Gamers The video game room at Tekkocon 2014 was not one to disappoint; there we plenty of tournaments (which are all tallied and covered live; find more info here) and no shortage of opponents! A Dance Dance Revolution set-up (with heavy duty metal controllers) dominated the game room’s center, with a LAN hub for Call of Duty clustered behind it. One half of the room had several projection screens all rocking old school good times with a catalog of different games and arcade joysticks, a Rock Band area, […]

  •   Tekkocon is Pittsburgh’s annual Japanese Pop Culture convention, filled with events at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center—it is not to be missed. This is the 12th incarnation of the convention and as far as I could tell, the best yet; there were plenty of attendees, staff members, and activities for the enthusiasts. Asking around it became clear that with each year, Tekkocon becomes bigger and faster; to that end, they enjoyed a 20% influx of pre-registration for 2014. Overwhelmingly though, virtually everyone I talked to (guest or staff) noted one thing as the most outstanding attribute about TekkoCon—the sense of community (which, one astute interviewee coined aptly as a “clubhouse mentality”). Congoers (of which there were more than […]

  •   NERD TREK is attending the upcoming Steel City Con at the Monroeville Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA from April 11th-13th! In addition to sanctioned gaming tournaments (for Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Kaijudo), the slew of merchant tables, a prominent artist’s alley, and great photo opportunities (which include a DeLorean time machine and replica 1966 Batmobile!) there are going to be numerous celebrities in attendance! Most importantly, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner are among Steel City Con’s guests! Obviously, NERD TREK has a few questions to ask but if our readers are keen to know something only Commander Riker or Data can detail, we’d love to hear it!   Any and all questions submitted before April 10th will be carefully considered and likely asked before any others by our resident […]

  •   This weekend I’m a press guest of Pittsburghs #1 anime convention—Tekkocon! The events began tonight and continue through Sunday, running the gamut from LARPs to movie showings to card games and everything in between. Every staff member I’ve met thus far has been wonderfully helpful and they’ve really put together a top-notch crew for this year’s convention, held down at the waterfront in the spacious David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Later this week we’ll have more about the convention—a solid rundown of the video game tournaments, interviews with celebrity guests, and some of the story behind the formation of the magnificent 2014 gathering—but in doing the rounds today I found something that people need to know about immediately: TekkoShodown. […]

  • Phil Glotfelty over at Gamemasters (Pittsburgh’s best, newly-remodeled hobby shop!) has been on to me for a few weeks about writing something for his re-vamped website. After thinking about it for a bit, I’ve decided that I owe more than just him a proper review—Paizo is due some love for the NPC Codex as well. When I first heard about this book, I wasn’t impressed—that was a mistake on my part. This is easily the best thing I got at Gencon last year and has paid for itself several times over at this point. The fact that it’s open content shouldn’t deter you either; what’s the random shopkeeper the PCs have decided to stiff have for attack options? Now those are at hand (not on a […]

  • Hello folks! I swear, I have been toiling away on some brilliant material for AdventureAWeek.com  but there are always more designs to build, ideas to implement and opportunities within Pathfinder to innovate the ruleset. Liber Influxus Communis: the Book of Collective Influence is emblematic of that concept. Amora Game has collected some amazing designers (many already with their Paizo achievement badge and an RPG Superstar!) and (best of all, obviously), it’s got two major contributions from me. The project reached the funding goal in just under a week and there’s still a little time left to jump on board! I’m just going to talk about the two classes I’m responsible for, designs that have been brewing in my head for quite a […]
