Description
I have been an avid/hardcore gamer since the days of the intellivision. My reviews are unfiltered and unbiased and purely personal opinion. I believe people deserve at least one honest opinion of a game from a source not controlled by outside influence! Power to the people!

  • Anyone that knows me, knows I love FPS games. Not the campaign mind you, but the online multiplayer. Yes Modern Warfare did actually have a great single player campaign, but great single player campaigns and the COD franchise aren’t exactly hand in hand. So why is there such emphasis on the single player campaign from Treyarch? Rumor circulating about it claims that certain missions will be one shot deals where dieing will actually affect the storyline. A page obviously swiped from the Heavy Rain playbook. But does anyone care? Never mind the massive plot holes, like characters that died in Black Ops mysteriously being alive. Or the juxtaposition of flipping from normal combat in the 70’s and 80’s to futuristic […]

  • I just read an “in depth” article about the upcoming Wii U console and to say I’m underwhelmed is an understatement. Let’s look passed the fact that Nintendo isn’t confirming ANY of the hardware specs for a moment, ignore the bogus claims of PS3 and 360 besting graphics and get to the meat of the information available. One: Nintendo is still calling the new console the Wii U. Why? Who knows, Nintendo is in love with stupid names for systems. Two: Nintendo is rumored to be more accessible to third party developers. This is supposed to mean that gamers may get more games than Mario 95 Galaxy Warrior Princess, Mario Kart 52 Tokyo Drift, and another god damn Wii Sports […]

  • Anyone who has read any of my previous NERDTREK posts should know one thing by now, I HATE REBOOTS! Of course, for every rule, there is an exception. Thus, my love of the recently re-released Ico/Shadowof the Colossus package. I’m not sure whether or not I would actually call this a reboot, moreover a hi-def makeover of two epic and underrated games from team Ico. Unlike a lot of other games that get pushed onto consumers over and over again, like Mario Galaxy Seventeen blah blah blah, these two games needed to be re-released, so younger gamers can experience the beauty and wonder they provide. And, what better way to play them than the two games getting redone to look […]

  • Rage: A New Version of the Old Scene Rage is the new IP from ID Software, a company that has not released a new game in 15 years. Oh, and if you don’t like my usage of Aerosmith lyrics in my title, tough. Anyway, I digress. They have, however, given us gems like Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D and created the fps genre we all love so much today. That takes us to Rage, the newest installment from Id. I was lucky enough to have a full hour to play Rage at PAX Prime this year. The game blew me away! The cinematic opening shows Earth being struck by an asteroid, which causes the apocalypse. You wake up from a […]

  • Cooking Mama, aka What The Hell Happened To Nintendo? I remember the first time I saw the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I was in junior high, still playing games on my Commodore 64 (yeah, I’m that old, bitches) when a grey box with huge cartridges and a cool-looking robot arrived next to my television. That robot turned out to be nothing more than a piece of plastic that stood by your Nintendo, not really doing anything. Funny, how that sounds like every Nintendo peripheral released since. Anybody out there still using their Wii Fit Board? Thought not.   What I didn’t realize then was that the grey box by my TV was about to change video gaming forever. All of […]

  • Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is the newest installment to the Assassin’s Creed universe. I watched an in depth reveal of game-play and story at PAX and walked away from it ready to stab people. I admit to being initially skeptical. Was this going to be Assassin’s Creed 2B? What can they do to make me want to slip my hooded cloak on again? Well, the answers surprised and excited me. The game-play demo showed so many cool things that this game is now firmly on my “must buy” list. The story is the continuation of Ezio and Altaire, with a sprinkling of Desmond to boot. According to the Ubisoft developers, this will tie up the loose ends of Ezio and Altaire and conclude their particular stories. But, […]

  • Myself and several other NERDTREK Editors had the distinct pleasure of attending an industry event for Activision. We were wined and dined and got to see, play, and watch demos for several upcoming titles. The topic of this particular article is obviously Prototype 2. And, like the title says, it’s not just another sequel. Prototype 2 is turned up to 11 (that’s right kids, a Spinal Tap reference). If you are too young to get it, Netflix it and watch it. Anyway, back to my story, as I said Prototype 2 turns it up to 11 in every way possible to make a game better than the previous version. The graphics are better, even though this was a pre-alpha build […]

Somehow, our rag tag group of editors survived the mayhem.  We walked a lot, talked even more and even had time to play some games.  The amount of work we, as a team, have ahead of us to share with you guys is overwhelming, to say the least. We did our best to update Facebook as we played, but sometimes we got way too sidetracked. For us, PAX actually started Thursday, not Friday. Thursday, we were invited to a media only event with Activision. We were treated to a thirty-minute presentation of Prototype 2 that, literally, made my jaw drop. Got hands on time with the new X-Men title […]

Now, that’s not to say that all I do is play FPS games. I stretch across a wide spectrum of gaming to serve all of my gaming needs. And, that’s what makes PAX even more fun. I get to roam around and see the hot new titles coming out from sure to be blockbusters likeAssassins Creed, Uncharted, Modern Warfare 3, and too many more to list. But PAX also gives love to smaller indie developers, and I was shocked to see how many emails we, at Nerdtrek, received from these indie […]

Not from ninety degree weather, but from developers not feeding our habit. I know that all of the best games are coming out for the holiday insanity consumer psychothon called Christmas, but why don’t companies throw us a bone? Instead of a steady diet of ass kicking games, we gamers are forced to ration our habit like Samwise Gamgee rationed lambas bread in Lord of the Rings. It’s irritating to say the least, and downright infuriating otherwise. I don’t mind waiting for an awesome experience, but devs can break the November tradition and give us some tender morsels […]

Obviously, times have changed since then, better graphics, better sound, better experiences. Something else that has changed, is the price of current console and PC games. They are no longer in the realm of $35. Games are routinely $59.99, fairly cost prohibitive for the majority of gamers. Sure, the addition of “Greatest Hits” titles has eased some of the burden of cost, but you have to wait for said game to a) Be well enough to be a greatest hit and b) Wait for […]

Having been a long standing fan of the series, (even one that was released for the Psp) I had high hopes and higher expectations. Luckily for me and anyone else who cares to play it, I wasn’t disappointed. As in previous Socom titles, you head a team of elite operatives trying to save the world from utter destruction by various individuals. But luckily, the world has you and your team here to put a bullet in their collective heads to thwart whatever plans they had. Level design is pretty standard fair for a war game, lush jungles, ancient ruins, bunkers and […]

Now, before you bother hating me, I have played it and the motion technology is sub-par at best. And, don’t get me started on the garbage Nintendo passes off as games. Cooking Mama, really? Like that’s what I want to do with my time gaming, act like I’m preparing cookies. Anyway, Nintendo announced plans for the surprisingly named, Wii 2. Tech specs are shady as of yet, and some wild claims (graphics better than both the PS3 and 360, I don’t think so), have already been recanted. HDMI and 1080p are also […]

Often overlooked in the grand scheme of a person discussing how good or bad a game is, but something I feel is very important. The first game I remember playing, that truly made me want to play it over again after finishing it, was the original Silent Hill for the PS1. The fact that you could play it again, and by omitting certain things or doing other things in the game would give you a different ending, blew me away and totally hooked me. Literally, from that point forward, any game I played with multiple endings immediately got […]

You can play games in 3D.  The bigger question is, does it make gaming any more enjoyable than playing a game in standard 2D?  I had the opportunity to demo games in 3D at last year’s PAX conference, and I’m not sure. Yes, it was more engaging, ever so slightly, but more none the less. Is it a make it or break it experience? To me, it wasn’t. It was cool to play for a few minutes. The games I played did […]

  • Is it better to have a game that while being short (6 to 8 hour campaign) totally blows me away?  Or is it better to have a game with a long (10 to 20 or more hour) campaign that is satisfying but not epic? It is a topic that I have been wrestling with for a very long time. To me, it’s almost dependent on the type of game that I’m involved with at the time.  Also, I would much rather have a company give me an experience I’m sure to remember rather than something I’ll likely forget in a week.  I mean, is bigger always better?  In certain avenues, yes – gun fights, for instance. It’s something I’ve always equated to the gaming equivalent of training wheels, something “real” gamers would never lower themselves too. After all, my Dualshock 3 has 10 buttons if you include the analog sticks, 2 of those actually, and 4 directional buttons, so why would I ever stoop so low as to use a motion controller? Simply because the Sony Motion controller is brilliant! Unlike the “insert gag here” Wii motion controller, it works, and it’s accurate. Not to mention the Sharp Shooter! It holds the two pieces of the motion controller in an assault rifle shaped case, making the game […]

  • This is a discussion that has run almost as long as Camaro vs. Mustang and X-Box vs. Playstation. Are games art? It depends on your definition of art. Art, by its very nature, is virtually impossible to define, though. What art is to one is nonsense to another. So, what criteria do we use? In my opinion, art should move you either emotionally or spiritually. Can a game accomplish that? Surely some games have moved us at one point or another. Were you not moved by the nameless heroe’s plight in Shadow of the Colossus?  Sure, it took a while to understand what was going on, but once you did, how could you not be moved by it? For anyone unfortunate […]
