  • Review/Miscellaneous Musings: The Dracula Dossier – Dracula Unredacted (System-neutral/GUMSHOE) This massive hardcover clocks in at 476 pages (489 in pdf form, with cover etc. being counted among the pages), so let’s take a look!   This book was moved up in my review-queue due to me receiving a print copy in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.   In a nut-shell, this is a twist of the original Dracula-novel as penned by Bram Stoker, with annotations. “I don’t need to read that, I know Dracula’s story already!” – I can see this impulse in at least some readers out there. You’d be wrong, for the text actually has been expanded by roughly 1/5 – 1/4 of its size, with […]

An essential part of that development is taking the many pieces of paleontological jigsaw that digs present to us and using them to form a useful, informative and forward thinking picture of dinosaur life, but without the help of actual knowledge. • The first time that I saw the movie Goodfellas, I was amazed by the story that was being told. I was even more amazed when I heard that Goodfellas was inspired by the true story of Henry Hill’s life.   Henry Hill passed away on June 12, 2012. Upon hearing that news, my interest in this American gangster was reinvigorated. This led me to read the book Wise Guy by Nicholas Pileggi.   I absolutely loved this book. It tells the story of Henry Hill’s life from the moment he stepped foot in the organized-crime cab stand at the tender age of 11 years old to the day when he was caught by the feds and had no choice but […]

  • Although I like to think of myself as a history nerd, I generally avoid non-fiction books unless they are about World War II or famous, influential people (if I’m not interested in the subject, a non-fiction book can be quite boring). However, Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls promotes itself as a true-life novel and it does not disappoint since this book read as a fast paced novel and I found it difficult to put down. One line sums up this book for me:  “I became known as Lily Casey, the mustang-breaking, poker-playing, horse-race-winning schoolmarm of Coconino County, and it wasn’t half bad to be in a place where no one had a problem with a woman having a moniker […]

  • If there’s one thing I can say to William Todd Rose it’s well done. Well done mate, well done. Reading The Seven Habits of Highly Infective People is a rush, there’s no other way to describe it. Set in two time lines, the story follows the consciousness of Bosley Coughlin, a druggy able to cross the plains of existence and see, not only into the past, but into the future through what he calls the Eye of Aeons. On one of these trips into the future he encounters Ocean, a young girl trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic city where zombies roam the streets and people had waged war for something as simple as food. Merely a passenger in her […]

  • Sometimes I think that being a non-American puts me at a disadvantage, that a lot of references tend to go over my head and I’m left with the barren perception of an outlander to try and understand a situation I have no reference for. I’m left to evaluate stories, books and matters from a new perspective, like coming in on the end of the punch line of a joke and not knowing why everybody is laughing or enjoying it. This was my experience with Devil Bat Diary – The Journal of Johnny Layton. The book by Peter H. Brothers severed as a novelization of the 1940 PRC film “Devil Bat” an old comedy-horror staring Bela Lugosi. I had not seen […]
