Cooking Mama, aka What The Hell Happened To Nintendo?

Cooking Mama, aka What The Hell Happened To Nintendo?

I remember the first time I saw the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I was in junior high, still playing games on my Commodore 64 (yeah, I’m that old, bitches) when a grey box with huge cartridges and a cool-looking robot arrived next to my television. That robot turned out to be nothing more than a piece of plastic that stood by your Nintendo, not really doing anything. Funny, how that sounds like every Nintendo peripheral released since. Anybody out there still using their Wii Fit Board? Thought not.

What I didn’t realize then was that the grey box by my TV was about to change video gaming forever. All of a sudden, games were in living rooms everywhere, driven by a company that started out making playing cards! The original NES gave us true gaming gold. Super Mario Brothers, Metroid, Legend of Zelda, and Blaster Master are just a few of the amazing titles we were given the pleasure of playing. These games set the tone of gaming for decades. How many games were spawned from just that handful of genre-defining titles?

Today all I can say is, “What the hell happened to you, Nintendo?” Now, instead of giving us new and exciting experiences, they give us titles like Cooking Mama. This ‘game’ is a collection of crappy mini-games that have you wagging your appendages like you have Parkinson’s disease and drank 25 triple espressos. At best, this is a cruel joke played on the gaming community. At worst, the creators feel they have a legitimate gaming experience on their hands. Honestly, who the hell is playing this garbage? I would rather play the Atari monsterpiece E.T. than waste my time on a Cooking Mama title.

For those who enjoy these titles, I say, “shame on you.” Support real games with real innovation. This series exemplifies the worst of selling out in the game industry. The fact that Nintendo has made yet another version shows that the company only cares about the bottom line, not providing the consumer with something worth paying for. Please, fellow gamers, STOP THE INSANITY!  Vote with your dollars! Don’t settle for another pile of crap being passed off as a real game!
