Saturday August 27th NERD TREK has a 2 hour interview and demo of SKYRIM! Before we dive into our interview we ask for your input. What questions would you like NERD TREK to ask Bethesda? Send them our way via the comments section below and we will include them in our interview!
NERD TREK’s most anticipated game of the year, and what we have been calling Bethesda Softworks “magnum opus”- SKYRIM is due for release 11-11-11.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a role-playing video game being developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls action role-playing video game series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It is scheduled to be released on November 11, 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Skyrim is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, in the land of Skyrim. The province has erupted into civil war after the assassination of its king. Concurrently, the god Alduin, who takes the form of a massive dragon, has arisen to destroy the world. The player character is one of the last living Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), and must fend off Alduin and save Skyrim from destruction.

Will there be Daedric Shrine quests?
Hi, are werewolves in the game? And can you become one?
Hi, are Daedric shrine quests back? And will they have actual shrines instead of just a marble statue?
Will there actually be a substantial quest line for vampires? Will vampire clans be back?
With the new Radiant Storytelling, will the dragon encounters become annoying at times?
Will we see the charred ruins of Oblivion gates?
Will finishing moves be a feature that can be toggled on and off so as to avoid being forced out of first-person, for those players who prefer it to third-person?
I would just like some clarification on the hand-to-hand matter because Todd Howard said it was non-lethal and Pete Hines said it was lethal.
Is there a possibility that armour degradation might be implemented again through DLC, or is it definitely gone for good?
Does bethesda game studios plan on streamlining fallout 4 as much as skyrim?
About guilds, will there be options for those who do not wish to run the guild when given the opportunity to accept the position?
Will being Guild Master be more rewarding than on Oblivion?
Will dragons be able to utilize every shout the player can, and will the more difficult dragons have multiple shouts in their arsenal? It would be somewhat one-sided if only the player had access to every shout, considering that it the dragons’ language to begin with.
Will Skyrim have tons of new and old animals?
If so, can we hunt/skin them?
According to Pete Hines in the BulletproofPixel radio interview, between 5 and 500 different creatures.
Can you summon more then 1 creature with conjuration?
In regards to the special finishing moves, I am curious, will enemies be able to perform them against us when we die? Would be especially entertaining to see a dragon just toss us as we are killed, or a bandit to run us through. It would make death more interesting than just reloading right away.
What benefits do we gain from sleeping , since we don’t need to sleep to level up anymore ?
Where can we safely store our loot ?
Do upgraded weapons and armor look visually different from non-upgraded weapons and armor ?
Can we summon multiple creatures at once with the conjuration skill?
Can you explain the new alchemy system that is going to be implemented into Skyrim?
Can we dye our armor or clothing ?
Can we have non-lethal duels with NPCs and make money in the process ?
Does Skyrim boast an array of underwater content like sunken ships and under water treasures? Also, how many species of underwater critters are there and what is your favorite?
I heard it was confirmed that there is a dragon shout that summons a dragon by name to aid us. Does that mean that dragon is an actual character in the main quest or will they just be a nameless, personality-less summon creature in the shape of a dragon?
How much do the effects of poisons last , since their effects were only applied to the first hit with melee weapons in Oblivion .
Will there be a difficulty setting in the game and how does it effect gameplay?
Pete confirmed via twitter that there won’t be a difficulty slider, rather it will be something like Hard, Easy, Very Hard, etc., as in FO3.
However, the specific ways that these settings affect gameplay has not been described yet.
How is the pickpocketing skill going to work ? and and what do we gain from levelling it up ?
Short Version: Lycans (Werewolves) going to be included or are they DLC material?
With Vampires confirmed many are curious as to what is going on with Lycans (Werewolves as others know them.) This has been an itch in my side for a while now and that itch has become tougher to scratch with the inclusion of Vampires. (No Twilight fan here, I just think Lycans could rip a Vampire in half quite easily and it would be better to play as one.)
What is the pickpocketing skill ? and what benefits can we reap from investing our time improving it ?
From what we have seen dragons behave like animals, but will they use tactics and strategy with the terrain and dragon shouts? They are supposed to be an intelligent race (not animal). Also, with the NPC family revenge feature, will some dragons have this as well?
Can you shed some light on the pickpocketing skill and what perks might be associated with it ?
I tried asking Pete about this Via twitter and received no reply, so if you would, please ask if it will be possible to enchant arrows in Skyrim?
I always felt as if it was something that oblivion was lacking, and because of the fact that you could stumble upon them in a chest in the middle of no where, and not make them yourself. It felt as if there was some secret cult of old wizards somewhere who were the only ones who knew how to enchant arrows and (presumably) ran around naked tossing the enchanted arrows in random chests.
Please ask this for me, as I have wanted to know for months and I guarantee its a question they’ve never been asked.
We know that we can have finisher moves with melee weapons, what about with magic?
No Love for Lefties?!
Can you please confirm if we can hold a shield with our right hand and a one handed weapon with our left hand.
I would also like to know if upgrading armor and weapons changes the look of it.
what types of upgrades will happen with the smithing skill?
What makes pickpocketing a big enough part of the game now to include its own skill tree?
Will there be an official “Music of Skyrim” Soundtrack CD marketed? David Soule’s compositions definitely deserve one.
Does the HUD system have optional configurations for the gamer to choose from? The new dispaly system uses far more screen real estate than any previous ES games and the compass position is particularly obtrusive.
Does applying upgrades to your weapon and armor change their looks?
What’s so essential about pickpocketing to give it its own skill ?
Why did you remove spell-making ?
How deep does the marriage element go? Are there extra quests or tasks you get from being married?
Are there any special animations related to friendships, romances, and marriage, like handshakes, hugs, kisses, etc.
How many options for marriage are there per race?
Can you have children or adopt them?
Will the persuasion system be rev vamped? If yes how so?
Can we play musical instruments for money ?! like in the RPG game Two Worlds 2 ?
Example :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGvuOBo5rQU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-rQhmKrrzY
Will we be able to wear clothes underneath armor, like in morrowind?
Will tasks such as eating have animations?
Will there be portable bed rolls, to sleep in the wilderness?
Will we be able to sail, or board ships?
Holy crap! You guys rock!!! Keep the questions coming! I’m making a list of the questions and who asked them. I’m going to be getting stuff together for an article AND a future podcast so stay tuned and hopefully all of your questions will soon be answered.
I really still can’t believe I get to PLAY SKYRIM tomorrow. I feel like a little kid in a candy store… that sells RPG games… and dice… and pays you for shopping there. Rad. Yes, I’m bringing back RAD.
Hey Jonathan!
I am tgl1992 from the Official Bethesda forums, and once I gave the word what you are doing, it just KABOOMED! So when are you going to post the interview? Article or video? And when?
Thanks!
Thanks man! We have some KILLER DETAILS ON THE WAY NOW! Check back soon!
NERD TREK has some exclusive details that have never before been released on the net! Check back and it will be live before midnight. I played Skyrim for almost 2 hours today and it was amazing!
Will dragons be able to pick the player character up as well as NPCs?
Your a lucky man Jon.
Another question from me;
How is night vision handled in Skyrim? I play a khajiit strictly and would like to know what to expect.
It’s the effect more specifically. The blue tint got annoying for awhile.
One more question! What can we do in chapels? Will it be possible to join the clergy?
Arenas are out, armor is merged, equipment durability is gone, no hardcore mode…….are some things being taken because you expect modders to take finish your work?
Sorry, the “take” before finish can be omitted
Also, I know the question is a little rude but I just can’t understand why they would remove so many features that were in previous games. Could you perhaps rephrase my question in a more polite way before you ask it? Thanks
Being reptiles, do Argonians have any special relationship with the dragons?
t was previously announced by Pete Hines that there is no Necromancer “Guild” – does this mean all Necromancers will be automatically hostile, like in Oblivion, or is there some possibility for dialogue, quests, or at least neutrality for all of us Necromancer fans?
(many of us were disappointed that we couldn’t talk with Necromancers in Oblivion as they seemed to be a lot more interesting than the Mage’s Guild).
How long will it take to reach max level?
One that I guarantee has not been answered yet ( and it’s so elegant and simple! ):
Is there a way to increase our jump height?
Can we use Necromancer based spells? Example: Summon the Dead/Dark magic etc…
yes this is confirmed in the bulletproof pixel interview with Pete Hines
Will we just be given all of the ‘schematics’ for craftable items(as well as potions/poisons from alchemy) or will we have to actually find them via exploring, buying from vendors, etc?
The weapons you create through smithing, will they be unique and customizable, or the same as any other weapon?
Will the dragons still be around after we beat the main quest? Or will they disappear like the Oblivian gates in Oblivian?
Sorry Oblivion. haha
Definitely ask about Daedric shrine quests, I’m dying to know.
Can you do thrust attacks with swords or other weapons that have pointy edges?
can we play musical instruments for money ?
Will the bartering system work like it did in Fallout 3 where merchants actaully lost gold due to selling items to them? Or will it be like Oblivion? (Hope not)
is the swimming looks much better than oblivion !?…DO female and male hve different hair !?…will wood cutting be viewable !? or its just the tree will be automaticly cutted and without any view ?!
From SebastianTES:
Can you go a bit into detail how the crafting skills work? (Smithing, Alchemy, Enchanting)
Will we be able to ride any other creature than horses?
We now know that we can animate fallen combatants with certain “Necromancer”-spells, can you please elaborate? Can we for example animate a Giant?
Will we be able to equip to different gloves/gauntlets like equipping weapons?
Are there any of the Deadric artefacts we’ll see again? (Umbra, Azura’s Star, The Skeleton Key etc)
We know from the lore that the Bosmers are cannibals. Will it be in Skyrim, if so how will it be implemented?
Care to spoil if there are any were-creatures in the game, regardless if you can be one or not?
With the school of Alteration we can open locks; can we close locks as well?
Generally how long will the guild quests be? Are the Guild Quests non-linear?
Are any new types of swords? Scimitars or something else?
Can we own house-pets?
To be honest, Telekinesis was a little bland in Oblivion, any new changes to that in Skyrim?
How does conjuration work with the new 2 hand system? Can we conjure two different creatures? What about if the same spell is in both hands, how does that affect it?
What benefits do we gain from sleeping ?
How do poisons work ?
Can we make traps ?
How does the pickpocketing skill work and what are some of its perks ?
Can we disguise ourselves ? as guards for example?
Do upgraded (via smithing) weapons and armor look different from non-upgraded weapons and armor ?
Can we dye our armor ?
Can we summon more than one creature at once ?
Are there dremora? Like, as a summon?
Is there house customization, like with the different themes in Fallout 3?
Does night-eye turn everything blue?
Are there shortswords?
Are there werewolves?
Could you specify what is meant by “necromancer spells”? Are they like Risen Flesh and the Staff of Worms in Oblivion or something different?
Has the “you cannot sleep in an owned bed” problem actually been resolved?
Is daedric armor harder to find, like in Morrowind?
How are stolen items identified, if they’re identified at all?
Is there an indicator of whether or not a container respawns?
Is there a conjuration perk that increases the number of summons that can be active at one time?
Does the summoned dragon (via shout) count separately than a creature summoned by a spell?
Are there zombies as well as draugr?
Do windows show perpetual daylight when viewed from a building’s interior?
Do Argonians have a unarmed bonus like Khajiit, since lore supports them having claws?
Can Argonians have fins, or is it just horns and feathers?
Are there capes?
Are there cloth physics?
Is some armor unplayable, like in Oblivion (with the palace guards)?
How extensive is crafting?
How many houses are available?
Are all cities available for fast travel before being discovered, like in Oblivion?
Do Argonians have different swimming animations than the other races?
Do Argonians still have the permanent water breathing racial ability?
Are horses the only mounts?
Do gauntlets affect unarmed damage?
Any new weapon types?
Is there a daedric shrine to Jyggalag, Sheogorath, or both?
Will there be some references to Oblivion, like how Oblivion referenced Morrowind?
Any details on whether or not the Whiterun Witches Coven is in?
PC specs?
Can you block/parry while dual-wielding? At least in the form of attack-to-block-their-attack?
What is the range of the age slider?
Why the xbox DLC coming early?
How does the Creation Kit differ from the Construction Set?
Is there divorce and polygamy?
Benefits of marriage?
Can you marry anyone or only a few key people?
To what extent can you alter the economy? Is it just for that particular area, or if you mess with their exports affect all of Skyrim? How do people react if you cause a depression or something?
Is M’aiq the Liar in? At least in some form, or a descendant?
What’s Stormcloak’s agenda?
Will there be an alchemy journal? I mean, is there some in-game record of what ingredients have demonstrated particular effects? Or do we always have to guess and check?
1. How does snow in Skyrim work? We know that snow is dynamic, but how interactable is the snow? For instance, does snow show footprints and can we wade through snow as if it has depth?
2. Is the HUD interactable? Can we, for instance, remove the compass at the top of the screen if we want to, or we can we remove compass icons that show on the compass? In short, is there any way to turn certain HUD features off to each one’s liking?
3. How are jobs and such handled by the player? Will things like wood cutting, smithing, cooking happen in real time with actual animations which you can control like you can control your weapon?
4. At QuakeCon Todd said that the PC version will look “even way better”, however, on other occassions Todd has said that all platforms “look the same”. There is therefore some confusion concerning this; could you clear this out? How much better will the PC version look?
5. How will borders be handled? Will Skyrim use invisible walls like in previous games or will Skyrim have natural borders like impassable mountains?
6. And the most important question: Can the spell Clairvoyance be used as an optional replacer of quest markers?
I can answer about half of your questions people, I guess there’s a reason why all the interviews have the same questions over and over again…
And PLEASE do not waste any time asking about werewolves, we have heard them say they will not answer this question about 35 times now
This may be a really, really, big task, but would you mind helping doing this? Hopefully we can reduce the chance of redundant questions.
Daedric shrines: I think I heard a yes, but can’t verify.
Werewolves: Quit asking
Will dragons be annoying: Do you like being killed?
Armor degredation in DLC: probably not
Yes, hunting and skinning, since that’s how you get pelts (crafting) and meat (cooking)
Yes, a difficulty setting sort of like Fallout. Easy makes it easier (probably you do more damage, they do less)
Spell making is easy to abuse to auto-level. There’s probably other reasons.
No clothes under armor
Taking thing out for modders to do them: No one in their right mind would say yes
Necromancer spells, I THINK quests, no guild
Increasing jump height: Implied ‘no’
Dragons around after the main quest: They won’t spoil the ending
You can’t ride creatures other than horses
Pretty sure gloves=/= weapons
Locking stuff with alteration in Oblivion was taken out because you could wreck too much
Most likely no cloth physics
No new weapon types
Snow has footprints (I think)
7. Are finishing moves optional? If so, to what extent?
A lot of people don’t like that finishing moves in Skyrim sometimes force you from 1st person to 3rd person view.
Some people also don’t like that finishing moves sometimes are in slow motion.
Are these specific features for finishing moves optional, like how the kill cam was optional in Fallout: New Vegas?
Many people dislike these specific features, but like the animations for finishing moves. That’s why I’m asking if these features are optional or not, like in New Vegas.
If vampires are ingame will they stick to Skyrim lore (will a large group of them actually live under frozen lakes in eastern skyrim and will they have the mentioned abilities?) or will they just be random bandits (by that I mean typhical dungeon dwellers like in Oblivion)?
And are there any none-horse mounts? Will certain animals be useable as packmules?
@rocknsilver, I noticed a lot of questions from my post in yours and you sounded a bit irritated. For the record, I only asked the popular questions. Few of those were actually my own (such as the window and bed questions). I thought about not posting the werewolf, weapon, and horse questions, but I figured that it’d be best if they were answered one more time for the other commenters (who won’t stop asking), considering that my post is ridiculously large. Sorry if you both found it redundant/stupid. That wasn’t the intention. Again, sorry. Don’t shoot the messenger. 80% of my questions were from what I saw at the Bethsoft Skyrim forum.
And sorry if this post is unnecessary.
I’m sorry if I sounded mean, but I was very blunt since there were so many and I didn’t feel like using full sentences. I only intended to answer them, since people who ask questions that have been answered probably CAN find an answer elsewhere. There aren’t nearly as many chances to get new info.
Okay. Thanks for clarifying.
Will we be able to play our own music in the background on ps3? Will there be any type of spell making? Will you be able to have a kid in skyrim with you wife? What type of animal companions will we be able to have and will they aid us in battle? If i become a khajiit, will i be able to enjoy the game just as much as a nord or will i feel like i dont fit in? please ask these questions im dying to know.
Just for clarification:
- Are ALL weather affects confirmed?
- Is rain also dynamic in the sense that it doesn’t go through rooftops?
- Is it possible to create a fat character?
- Is it possible that armor/weapon degration will make a comeback?
VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
- Will NPCs give proper direction instructions now? Regarding the fact that I don’t want to use quest markers and even somehow turn off the location markers as well.
- Does the carriage system cost money? If so, is fast traveling also usable only with payment? Or is it like Oblivion where you can warp everywhere for free?
Ask about what kind of adult beverages there will be – the nords should be into their beers so hopefully they will have lots of different kinds of beer
