ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden offers up cool accommodations

The TRON suite will be especially appealing to TRON fans visiting Sweden

The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden is kept at a comfortable 5 degrees Celsius and is built entirely of snow and ice.  The first and largest in the world, ICEHOTEL Sweden offers one of the most unique hotel experiences you will ever have.  “Our ideas originate from the place we stand on; Jukkasjärv.  The river Torne that flows outside our office windows, the cold arctic climate, the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun.  Every season allows us to get inspired by the river, whether it is crystal clear ice, rapids shooting on a riverboat or a magnificent recently caught grayling.” says ICEHOTEL on their website.

Imagining a visit to this hotel, I can feel the crisp cold air biting at my face as I approach, completely wrapped in a fur lined cloak with 5 layers underneath.  Coming from the Pacific Northwest I think I am prepared for colder temperatures, but this is ridiculous!  Just stepping outside of the land rover that brought us here and into the snow and cold air causes everyone to start coughing from the extreme temperature change.  After the coughing subsides we stand and silently gaze as one at this miraculous structure before us, built entirely of snow and ice.  The entrance beckons us forward with a false promise of warmth. At least there won’t be a chill, biting wind inside.  We make our way up to the double doors, boots crunching in the frozen snow, boot prints show signs that we are not the only visitors this afternoon.  The doors are frozen shut and our guide smiles and says something in Swedish, moving to the front of the group he uses a metal pry bar to gently pop the doors open and then gently pushes them.  The doors glide open without a sound and display an elegant entryway full of ice chandeliers and furniture carved from blocks of ice.  Snow lines the floor and we wander in with our mouths wide open, gazing at everything in awe.  The doors slam shut and we whip around, startled by the loud sound.  A man in fine furs stands ready to welcome us and give us the grand tour.

We have arrived at ICEHOTEL in Sweden, this is sure to be an experience to remember for the rest of our lives!

The ICEHOTEL is not a only a hotel they build each winter, it is an ephemeral art project. Their gastronomic menu incorporates the many flavors of Swedish Lapland.  Each year, ICEHOTEL attracts visitors from all over the world to a little village in Lapland, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Many of them are taken further north, and explore the high mountains, all the way to the northern Norway to visit the fjords.

You don’t have to go to Sweden to visit the ICEHOTEL. They now have many locations in the world which you can find on their website http://www.icehotel.com.
