Jaimie Alexander plays Lady Sif in the Thor movie released in May 2011. Thor is a superhero who started appearing in Marvel Comics in August of 1962 in “Journey into Mystery” #83 and was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby. The Thor character is based on the Thor of Norse mythology. Thor has starred in his own series as well as being a perennial member of the superhero team the Avengers, appearing in each of the four volumes.
Writer Stan Lee can best describe how the team came up with the idea for Thor following the creation of the Hulk.
“How do you make someone stronger than the strongest person? It finally came to me: Don’t make him human — make him a god. I decided readers were already pretty familiar with the Greek and Roman gods. It might be fun to delve into the old Norse legends… Besides, I pictured Norse gods looking like Vikings of old, with the flowing beards, horned helmets, and battle clubs. …Journey into Mystery needed a shot in the arm, so I picked Thor … to headline the book. After writing an outline depicting the story and the characters I had in mind, I asked my brother, Larry, to write the script because I didn’t have time. …and it was only natural for me to assign the penciling to Jack Kirby…”
Being all powerful Norse Gods, Thor’s father Odin decides his son needs to be taught humility and places Thor (without memories) into the body and memories of an existing, partially disabled human medical student, Donald Blake. After becoming a doctor and on holiday in Norway, Blake witnesses the arrival of an alien scouting party. Blake flees into a cave after they hear him and start to pursue. Blake stumbles upon a strange hammer in the cave which coincidentally is Thor’s hammer Mjolnir in disguise. After striking the hammer against a rock, the magical energy released transforms Blake into the Thunder God- Thor.
After defeating the aliens, Thor shares a double life with his alter-ego. He starts his own practice and falls in love with his nurse- Jane Foster, while still trying to defends humanity from evil as Thor. Thor’s presence on Earth attracts the attention of his stepbrother and arch-enemy, Loki; who comes to Earth in a bid to destroy Thor. Loki is responsible for the emergence of three of Thor’s main foes: the Absorbing Man, the Wrecker, and the Destroyer. At some point Loki’s tactics are accidentally beneficial when he uses an illusion of the Hulk to draw Thor into battle, it results in the formation of the superhero team the Avengers, of which Thor is a founding and longstanding member.
Thor’s father Odin does not want him to love a mortal unless she can pass a trial. Jane Foster accepts but fails, a heartbroken Thor sends her back to Earth where she is given another chance at love. The heartbroken Thor is introduced to the Asgardian warrior Sif.
Sif is played in the new Thor movie by Jaimie Alexander to the excitement of nerds the comic book world over. Sif is an Asgardian warrior and lover of Thor, she spends much of her time worrying about and searching for him. Sif often accompanies Thor and his friend Balder into battle, Balder develops an attraction to her; however the faithful Sif never shows affection for anyone but Thor. Sif is based on the mythological being of the same name. She first appears in “Journey Into Mystery #102”.
Sif shares powers common among all Asgardians including enchanced strength, durability, and longevity through the consumption of golden apples. She is highly skilled in hand to hand combat and utilizes cold weapons. In early appearances, Sif also possessed the innate ability to teleport herself and others from Earth to Asgard. At some point, Sif began relying on her enchanted sword, which could teleport her to other destinations besides Earth and Asgard.
Sif has been the constant companion of Thor and Balder since childhood. Sif was born with golden hair which turned black after Loki jealously cut it and replaced it with enchanted hair made by dwarves. At an early age Sif showed great prowess as a warrior and was considered the best female warrior in all of Asgard, matched only by Brunnhilde.
It is exciting to watch the sexy Jaimie Alexander fill the role of Sif as Thor calls thunder down with his hammer and enemies are scattered before them.
