Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness” getting the Hollywood manicure.

Looks like the classically awesome H.P. Lovecraft story At the Mountains of Madness is getting the full Hollywood shlock treatment. Well maybe not full-on shlock. James Cameron is producing and the always-stoked-to-be-everywhere Guillermo Del Toro will be directing.

Lovecraft’s material is touchy for film. He usually isn’t forthcoming with visual detail. Most of his “horror” is expressed as a post-script reaction to a once seen terror now writ in an insane man’s diary. I guess it leaves things open to interpretation?

I do have faith, though. Stuart Gordon (ReAnimator) has done Lovecraft like a goddamn champ. With From Beyond being an overlooked winner since 1986, and Dagon (2001) being another Lovecraft inspired sleeper that is a truly fantastic ride, the material definitely has potential in the right hands.

According to Cameron they are in “very active pre-production”. I’m hoping for more Devil’s Backbone, and less Hellboy.
