Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure

Skylanders is quite possibly the coolest video game for kids ever made.

The words “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” come to mind when I think about my initial reaction to the Skylanders video game.  It was right before PAX Prime 2011 that we found ourselves at an Activision party for press staff.  I was checking out all the newest Activision games hitting the market in the coming months.  While wandering wide eyed from console to console,  I glanced over and saw a table with what looked like some toys and a kids game.  “Lame”, I thought and continued on my way.

A few months later a package arrived at NERD TREK from Activision with the Skylander’s Spyro’s Adventure, three unique looking toy characters, and the “Portal of Power”.  It looked fairly impressive, but something only kids would be interested in.  I took it home and asked my son to try it out and let me know what he thought of the game.  I plopped myself down on the couch, and grabbed the latest issue of INC. Magazine in case I got bored.  I never cracked the cover.

As soon as my son Justice fired up the Xbox 360 the Portal of Power lit up in an impressive and colorful display.  After launching the game and watching an excellent intro with exciting animations and great character voices Justice placed one of the toy characters onto the Portal of Power.  That character immediately appeared in the game! That alone was enough to cause me to sit up and take notice, but this was just the beginning.

I’ll let my 9 year old son Justice take over from here.

Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure from a kid’s point of view

Hi my name is Justice and I’m 9 years old.  My dad asked me to try out a new game for NERD TREK called Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure.

I am amazed at how much you get with this game.  It comes with the Portal of Power, Gill Grunt, Trigger Happy, Spyro, special cards to activate them online, cards with their stats, and the game itself.

It’s really awesome that you can put your Skylanders on the Portal of Power.  You get to play them in the game.  There are elements like life, fire, water, air, tech, magic, mountain, and undead.

There are so many guys to collect.  There are four guys for each element.  There are eight different elements.  So there are 32 different guys you can get and play in the game.  You have to buy them at the store.  We went and bought Stump Smash and he was only eight dollars.  Now I have four Skylanders!

About Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure:

At the start of the game it tells you to choose a Skylander to put on the Portal of Power.  I chose Spyro.  The Darkness (bad guys) come with Kaos and destroy the Core of Light (thing that keeps the Skylanders in Skyland).  The Skylanders get shrunk and banished to earth where you get to become a Young Portal Master.  You get to control different guys and they all have different powers.  Your goal is to take back Skyland from the bad guys.

The things I like most about Skylanders:

  • You can get upgrades
  • You can take your guy anywhere and he will be the same level and everything.  Like I can take my guy to my friends house to play on his Xbox and still be the same level
  • The portal of power concept
  • You can find butterflys and get a discount on the upgrade shop
  • You can go back to a different chapter
  • Cannons
  • Rockets
  • You can lock shooters on bad guy ship shooters
  • You can push turtles

The things I like least about Skylanders:

  • In the middle of a chapter even if it says it saves your game, it only saves like the level and gold, but you have to start the whole chapter over!
  • You only get to pick one path
  • You can’t jump on your own.  You have to use a bounce pad

I would suggest this game to other kids my age.  Before this game came I was playing a few other games.  Since I started Skylanders it is all I want to play now!  I like to play it with my friends and sometimes even my Mom plays.

 Now back to my Dad!

Thanks Justice!  Nice work!

As my son figured out through mathematical deduction, there are 32 different characters.  This summons the logical conclusion that there are also 32 different ways to play the game.  Although each character shares an element with 3 other characters, each character also has very specific moves and abilities.  As the characters level up they obtain new abilities and grow larger and stronger.

I love the collectible nature of this game.  Something that all kids love to do is collect things.  Remember the days of Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Garbage Pail Kids?  I do, it was awesome and I collected them all.  Imagine if you could have taken those collectible action figures and placed them on a portal to transform them into playable characters?  After watching my son and his friends play this game for hours on end, I must make a very bold statement.  Skylanders is quite possibly the coolest video game for kids ever made, due to the collectible nature of the game and the fact that you can transform the figures into playable characters.

Three more details worth mentioning:

  1. The Skylanders story was written by the same team that brought you the first Toy Story movie!
  2. While playing the game we have found numerous Dungeons & Dragons references like 20 sided dice and Drow elves!
  3. There is also a PvP mode where players can pit their characters against each other in head to head combat!

My wife and son have both become heavily addicted to this exciting, engaging, and original video game.  It’s been a very long time since a video game (other than Skyrim) made me sit up and take notice, and Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure did just that.  Nice work Activision!
