Skyrim: Dragon Shouts

Dragon Shouts (a.k.a. The Voice or Thu’um) are words of the Dragon Language that can be used to release amazing effects. Dragons are naturally able to utilize Dragon Shouts, but only very special people are able to use them. As the Dovahkiin, you can use the Thu’um as naturally as Dragons. You may learn a total of 20 dragon shouts, each contains three words of power.

To learn a dragon shout these steps must be followed:

  1. Find a Word Wall.
  2. Read the Word of Power on the Word Wall. (Words of power are individual runes on the Word Wall that will be highlighted.)
  3. Kill a Dragon and absorb its soul.
  4. Use the dragon soul to unlock the word of power and its associated dragon shout.

During the course of the main story, the Dovahkiin also learns several shouts from certain characters. The souls for these shouts also come from the character that gives them. Initially, you will unlock the weakest version of the dragon shout. To unlock the most powerful version of that shout, you must learn the other two words of power that make up the shout and absorb two more dragon souls.

Locating Dragon Shouts

When in towns or even small encampments, if you use your Dragon Shout abilities, a Courier may run up to you and give you a “Letter from a Friend”. Each letter received from the Courier will provide a minor Quest that will lead to a Dragon Shout. There does not seem to be a limit of the number of letters the Courier will give, except for maybe when all Shouts have been learned. Couriers will locate your character anywhere in Skyrim. Also, new letters will be given only after the previous letter’s quest is complete.

Alternatively you can simply ask Arngeir if the Greybeards have found the locations of any Words of Power, and he will direct you to a word wall, marking it down on your map. Both methods may be used in conjunction with each other. Arngeir will stop giving shout locations after 20 shouts.

Available Dragon Shouts

Please note that a location will always give you the next word you have to learn in a shout. The order in which they are visited does not matter. Some shouts are learned during the course of the Main Quest.

Note: All Dragon Shout locations are correct according to the Official Skyrim Game Guide.
