  • Uncommon Callings Book 1: Archetypes for Outcasts, Vagabonds and Pariahs The first Uncommon Calling book clocks in at 23 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial,  1page SRD, leaving us with 20 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   We begin this collection of archetypes with the wild shot brawler, whose unarmed strike damage does not increase beyond 4th level; instead, he begins play with training in either a hand crossbow or a one-handed firearm, The former nets +1 to attack rolls with the weapon, the latter  Gunsmithing as well as a battered pistol as the gunslinger – both obviously also net the respective proficiencies. This replaces shield proficiency. If hand crossbows are chosen, 1st level lets […]

  • The Big Book of Bloodlines This massive, huge book clocks in at 153 pages, 1 page front cover, 2 pages of ToC/editorial, 1 page KS-thanks, 3 pages of SRD, leaving us with a colossal 146 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   We begin this pdf with an introduction regarding the goals of this book – in one sentence: Making bloodlines more versatile and interesting. This is achieved in a rather ingenious way – the pdf designates a number of bloodlines as parent bloodlines, others as children of said bloodlines. When multiclassing soceror and bloodrager, all you need to ensure is that the two bloodlines share a parent, are parent and child or match – i.e. one is […]

  • Book of Icons (13th Age) This massive pdf clocks in at 46 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page SRD, 1 page back cover, leaving us with an impressive 42 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   All right, at this point it’s not a big secret that I’m not the biggest fan of 13th Age’s vanilla icons – while recent installments of 13th Age Monthly and similar supplements have added dimensions to some of them, I still consider them to be a bit too archetypical. Similarly, the rather freeform approach to icons can be challenging for a GM, which is why this pdf provides pretty much a rather simple, yet more streamlined and concise […]

  • The Book of Loot (13th Age) This book clocks in at 72 pages. I received this book in print for the purpose of an unbiased, critical review and it thus was moved up in my reviewing queue. Even if you are not interested in 13th Age, please read this review. Finally: I do not own the pdf version of this book, so I can’t comment on it.   All right, so if you’ve been reading my reviews for a while, you’ll know what my introductory spiel will be here: If there is one thing I loathe about d20-based systems, it would be that they wrecked magic. What do I mean by this? The massive rules-interaction possibilities and mathematical crafting rules […]

  • Necropunk: Welshen Source Book This sourcebook detailing the second of the two mayor factions/societies in Necropunk clocks in at 41 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1.5 pages of SRD, leaving us with 37.5 pages of content, so let’s take a look, shall we?   We kick off with a more than aptly-written introductory fluff that makes me once again crave a necropunk AP and a novel before diving straight into the new crunch, namely, Welshen-specific archetypes, first of which would be the H’devvel – a kind of living philosopher/artist who receives points with which to inspire allies – for 24 hours. Other than that, the ability utilizes interesting bonus-type juggling and can be considered an interesting variant […]

That being said, not a whole lot of books have tackled the subject so far, in spite of the existence of these rules since ultimate combat. Enter Jon Brazer Enterprises’ second Book of Multifarious Munitions and we thankfully get some new fodder to […]

And the first spell is already uncommon to say the least: As part of the spell’s casting, the caster needs to stab him/herself with a +1 flaming dagger. This additional con-damage may not be mitigated and deals an additional point of constitution damage […]

  •   Today, I’m going to take a look at Jon Brazer Enterprises‘ Book of Magic: Signature spell-series, starting with   Book of Signature Spells I   This pdf is 12 pages long, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial & SRD, 1 page advertisement and 1 page back cover, leaving 8 pages for the signature spells.   After 3 pages of spell-lists, providing lists for classes like Magus, Alchemist, etc. (NICE!) as well as the basic core classes, we are introduced to the selection of new spells herein. If I have not miscounted, we get 31 new spells, several of which are supposed to be signature spells or certain legendary mages.  I really like that premise, as e.g. Bigby’s hands […]

  • I’ve been a big Stephen King fan since I read Pet Cemetery at the young age of 13, and it’s been a long time since I could say I LOVED one of Mr. King’s books. I think the last one was the final Dark Tower book. I’m so happy to be able to say that now! I LOVED this book! The Master of Horror has written a beautiful, touching novel that’s not at all like his usual work. Let me be clear…This is NOT a horror story. This is a love story, through and through, and it’s not at all what I expected it to be. Without spoilers, 11/22/63 is about a man who finds a ‘rabbit hole’ that transports him back […]

  • You know when you finish a book and it’s so good…so perfect…that you just sit there in awe and stare at it? That was me when I finished Ready Player One. Written by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One is set in the very near future–the year 2044. The planet has become an ugly place. Most people live in trailer stacks (yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like), the fossil fuels have been almost completely used up and global warming has become a reality. Luckily, there is an oasis…Called OASIS. The internet has become everything we’ve dreamed it will be. OASIS is total virtual reality, where you interact with people and the world completely inside a huge, immersive game. The creator […]
