So, what is a malborgoroth? Something really cool. You know how the cult-critter flumph is a representation of the weird good guys, the foes of the Dark Tapestry. Okay, now combine these with one of Final Fantasy’s most notorious foes – the Marlboro/Morbol! Add a dash of lovecraftiana et viola – he have the critter in question! The creature clocks in at CR 13. Its stingers inject acid for continuous damage, which is nasty; they can bury their tentacles into the […] -

Final Fantasy: Can The Series Be Saved?
Posted on August 30, 2012 | 4 CommentsI’ve been a fan of the Final Fantasy series ever since I first played Final Fantasy 1 on my Nintendo Entertainment System 21 years ago (Damn, has it really been that long?), and recently I’ve been yearning for some of that old school FF flair. I hooked up my trusty NES and took a trip down memory lane. I had forgotten how simplistic, yet how well crafted FF1 was back in the day. Even by today’s standards there are still some redeeming qualities of the game that shine. For instance, the game definitely has replay value. You have the choice to choose from 6 different character classes and you can combine them in any order you want. Want to be […] -
A Final Fantasy Remake
Posted on September 30, 2011 | 5 CommentsSquare Enix recently announced its plans to remake one of the more receptive Final Fantasy games for the PS3 and PS Vita. Which one? Already the cerebral fluids may be pumping in anticipation as to which game was selected by Square Enix. Drum rolls……Final Fantasy X. I know if you are a diehard FFVII fan like me then I already know the thoughts that are going through your head. Why is Square Enix so adamantly opposed to remaking FFVII? Why are they remaking FFX instead of FFVII? Who knows what their plans are? Perhaps it holds a glimmer of hope that we may see Square Enix return to FFVII to bring it back to the forefront of the franchise just […] -

Final Fantasy 1
Posted on September 9, 2011 | 5 CommentsThe Final Fantasy series has captured the hearts and imaginations of gamers the world over. A franchise which grew into a dominate power in the RPG video game market, only to flounder in recent years. Many quote specific titles or characters as their favorite in the series. What many forget though, is what started it all and how shaky that start really was. Today I want to revisit a classic RPG – Final Fantasy 1. Final Fantasy was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and first published in Japan by Square in 1987. It was originally released only for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the 8-bit giant of the day which many retro gamers still name as their favorite system. The story of […] -
History of the Chocobo
Posted on August 5, 2011 | 4 CommentsA true and complete history of the bestial motif of the Final Fantasy saga. “Wark! Wark!” or sometimes “Kweh!” The famous call of the Chocobo (チョコボ) is immediately recognizable by those of us fortunate enough to have followed the Final Fantasy series like maniacal religious fanatics. Although disappointment comes to mind when daydreaming of my recent ventures into the newest of the Final Fantasy world, the Chocobo nevertheless always puts a smile on my face. Cute and cuddly while at the same time making great pack animals and adventuring companions you can’t beat the Chocobo when it comes to animal companionship. Today I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the history of the Chocobo whose familiar appearance […] -
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Posted on June 17, 2011 | 75 CommentsFans have been pleading for a remake of Final Fantasy VII for years now. Finally, last year Yoichi Wada, the president of Square Enix, came out and made the remake plans official. Final Fantasy VII: Jenova’s Rebirth is slated for a 4th quarter 2012 release. Yoichi Wada, the president and chief executive of Square Enix, said that the company has “heard its fans’ pleadings to remake FFVII”, which was released over 14 years ago for the PS1. Prior to this Wada had said “Right now we don’t have a clear direction, but many fans have requested we remake Final Fantasy VII, we’re going to explore the possibility – whether or not we’re going to do it, if we’re going to […] -
Final Fantasy – the new model and what’s missing
Posted on June 4, 2011 | 21 CommentsFinal Fantasy, a game which summons forth dreams of magic, friendship, betrayal, monsters, chocobos, and of course- Cid! There was a time that I would wait with great anticipation for a new Final Fantasy game to be released so I could charge through it like a madman accomplishing all of the side quests and exploring the entire world. Alas, that time is no more. Final Fantasy 13 really left me with a disgusting taste in my mouth. Gone are the days of the world map, the exciting unique side quests, the strategic battles, and the motifs that really make a Final Fantasy game Final Fantasy. I would like to take a closer look at each of the missing pieces that […] -
Final Fantasy Tactics coming to iPhone & iPad
Posted on May 18, 2011 | 1 CommentSquare-Enix has announced that Final Fantasy Tactics will finally be released for iPhone and iPad in June or July 2011. The version slated for iPad is promised to be HD, eliminate the jagged edges present on the PS1 and PSP versions and introduce some new fancy graphics. The price has not yet been announced, but being as this is some of the best news to come out of Square-Enix in some time I could care less how much it costs! I’m buying it as soon as it’s available! As stated previously in my article “Games with the Best Replay Value“, FF Tactics holds a nice spot at #7 on my list! Also, as of late my son has been […] -
Eminence Symphony Orchestra: Music for the Gaming Generation
Posted on May 13, 2011 | 1 CommentThe first time I heard Eminence perform I was blown away. Being a retired professional touring musician I have a strong love, understanding, and respect for talented musicians. Coming from a rich background in gaming & film as well as many friends working in the industry I also have a passion for not only video games and movies themselves, but the stories and people behind them. Putting the two together was genius and Eminence Symphony Orchestra have done just that. Performing famous songs from games and movies such as Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Tsubasa Chronicle, Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, and even Super Mario Bros. the orchestra spreads a smile across my face while […] -
