  • Lovecraft Fantasy Gaming Toolkit This pdf clocks in at 70 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial/ToC,2 pages of SRD, 1 page blank, leaving us with a massive 65 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   Okay, so lovecraftian horror =/= lovecraftian fantasy. We need to get that out of the way right from the bat. When I’m playing CoC and ToC, I lean towards a more purist bent and tend to prefer investigation-heavy, deadly scenarios, where, more often than not, everyone dies or becomes insane, even if they win. This is not for everyone, though; most of my players prefer a less bleak perspective.   The pulpy side of those aforementioned systems never was really something […]

  • Phil Glotfelty over at Gamemasters (Pittsburgh’s best, newly-remodeled hobby shop!) has been on to me for a few weeks about writing something for his re-vamped website. After thinking about it for a bit, I’ve decided that I owe more than just him a proper review—Paizo is due some love for the NPC Codex as well. When I first heard about this book, I wasn’t impressed—that was a mistake on my part. This is easily the best thing I got at Gencon last year and has paid for itself several times over at this point. The fact that it’s open content shouldn’t deter you either; what’s the random shopkeeper the PCs have decided to stiff have for attack options? Now those are at hand (not on a […]

Friends of ours that are into sports or dance clubs constantly hound us about being a Hobbit(minus the adventuring) because we never go out to loud venues and, instead, choose the private setting of a home in order to take in the latest Dr. Who  episode or to play Magic: The Gathering with friends. For too long geeks have been misunderstood and mislabeled as self-chosen social outcasts. And there may be some geeks out there that DO choose to live completely off the social grid. But that is not who I speak for…. I speak for the geeks that want a place to call our own. I am talking […]

  • Welcome to my very first miniatures review on NERD-TREK. In this ( hopefully ongoing) series, we will be taking a close look at gaming miniatures both past and present. Including interviews with manufacturers, sculptors, painters and fellow enthusiasts as well as product reviews and possible sneak peeks at some upcoming miniatures. In part one of this post, we’ll be covering some of the products from Center Stage Miniatures.  Which reminds me, I’d like to take a moment and personally thank Matthew Solarz at Center Stage for donating both their time as well as the minis that made this series possible.  But enough about me, on with the review….   It was several months ago that I was contacted by the […]

  • The Expanded Shaman marks the second book in Open Designs’ New Paths series. Anyone paying attention is well aware of how well received the first installment (The Spell Less Ranger) was, and what type of pressure that places upon this book right off the bat. Question here then is, did Marc Radle have another bullet in the chamber? So let us take a look. Weighing in at 16 pages, with 10 pages of new material, 2 sheets for tracking wild shape and a spirit guide, cover, OGL, credit and ad (which would not fully load in my version of this PDF). Artwork is handled by the talented Rick Hershey, as those familiar with his style can easily recognize from the […]

Creators of Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream has announced the release of a new game called Beyond: Two Souls. Academy Award nominee Ellen Page, famous for her role as a pregnant teenager in Juno and the architect student in Inception, voices a woman named Jodie Holmes who appears to have a psychic connection to an entity named Ivan.  Hunted for her power, the game follows fifteen years of her life in which the gamers actions and decisions will influence the course of her history. The iconography of this cover piece definitely convey the sense of ancient secrets of power. Internally, the artwork is B&W, with pieces ranging from good to OK. This PDF continues a new look from the SGG camp for layout, going with a full page cover and dual column with embedded artwork formatting approach. Editing and spelling both appeared to be excellent, nothing really jumped out and caught my attention. Building an entirely new game mechanic, and form of magic, from three spells essentially would be daunting to say the least. It’s […]

Every day you find that designers, developers and even gamers push themselves outside the box that comes with society. Among those that shine is Camouflaj, a small independent game company that has one very big goal. I could go on and on about how modern games reflect society or how the gorgeous graphics that can rival the ancient masters of the canvas or, in addition, how the music score uses the best orchestral arrangements since Beethoven. All true, however, irrelevant to my salient point. Which is? Art is not complete until it meets the audience. That is to say, that any form of art is not complete until it is presented to an audience. It’s sort of like old adage ‘if there is nobody in the forest to hear the tree fall’, yadda, yadda, yadda. Sure, you can argue that a TV show or movie is complete when the final edit is done. But […]

Enter the User: What Turns Video Games into Art.

Video games as art. • I am assuming you are a fellow gamer, the concept of basing a desire to recreate our fantasies is why we’re all here. Whether it was a character from a favorite novel as a child, that one movie, with those two guys (you know the one), or a show you ran home from school everyday to not miss a minute of. My point is, when you ask a roleplayer for their source of inspiration, you’re going to hear about favorite characters and ideals from throughout the entire genre of fantasy, sci-fi, noir, even westerns if you ask the right folks, we all grew up pretending to be someone, and luckily, most of us never outgrew that. The problem comes in […]

  • I have broken down and decided to play World of Warcraft.  There are many reasons why but the top 3 fall back on these tenets: un-dedicated gamers in my area, hectic work schedules of table-top gamers, and the ability to get lost in a world within a few minutes rather than waiting on schedules to synch between ALL players. Yet, the biggest reason I have decided to play is because my wife plays.  I know, I know.  Like Felicia Day says in ‘The Guild’, “I know, a chick gamer.”  And, yes, I DO think it’s hot.  So while I can’t convince my wife to play D&D or a myriad of other table-top RPGs, I can jump online with her and go stomping around collecting […]

  • It’s not often that a game has true replay value. Sure, you’ll replay it because you enjoy it but – normally, you go through the mechanics like a well oiled machine. You know the twists and turns, you might find an award (or kill) here or there that you missed the first time but generally, it’s all the same from beginning to end. Not so I have to say with the game Heavy Rain. Having purchased this game more almost a year ago, I surprised myself the other night by feeling the need to play it again. For the fourth time. Heavy Rain was released in 2010 by Quantic Dream. To my knowledge, it was only released to PS3, first […]
