  • On a cold November evening in 1976, in the basement of the downtown library, I met my watery end. My flagship was spotted, attacked and sunk carrying all hands down to their doom. Sighing, I rose from the carpeted floor and congratulated my opponent, handing back to him the tape measure and the little ship figures. I was out of the battle, and now adrift within the meeting of my high school’s War-game Club. So what to do now? It was only 7 pm and my Mom would not be coming to pick me up for another hour, at least. All the other club members were happily engaged in their respective Avalon Hill pursuits leaving me odd man out. Walking around the tables I noticed that there was […]

  • Have you heard about this new website Adventureaweek.com?  If you’re a RPG fanatic and miss Wizards “Map-a-Week” or Dungeon Magazine you’re in for a treat!  World famous cartographer and illustrator Todd Gamble (D&D 3.5, Forgotten Realms, 3x ENnie Award, Origin Award) and Lead Game Developer Jonathan Nelson have started a new website featuring a new original adventure module every week! The best part is that you can run the adventures right off their website and everything is hyperlinked to the SRD for both 3.5 OGL game systems and the Pathfinder RPG.  Yes, that picture to the right is me running a Pathfinder sesssion entirely off my iPad!  I didn’t even need a GM screen!!!  😛  It doesn’t get much better […]

Soon we found ourselves talking with a gentleman whom we later found out wasn’t just any lackey programmer, but the LEAD developer of the entire game.  Of course, we found this out after asking a series of somewhat uncalled for questions to appease our own comedic appetites as well as those of our readers. On the other side of things there are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of video games I have played part way through, quit, and never returned to because I just got bored or they were repetitive and I just lost interest. Most games don’t hold my attention long enough to become classics that I want to play again years later, so this list is very important to me as I will continue to replay these games for the rest of my […]

  • Although many of my players love playing a powerful PC, there is something to be said for the low level RPG adventure. How I came to love the low level adventure probably has roots in my trappings as a child while learning the d&d game. Those basic dnd red books or the keep on the borderlands module, very basic stats with a basic beginning, trying to explain from where your characters hail and then have then die at the hands of the enemy in the first adventure.  Time to roll up some new PCs! Most of the time though I was a fair DM and would let the players make their own choices which would determine if they lived or […]

  • Plumbing the Depths When it comes to actually playing games, many of us who work in the RPG industry have two modes – playing like mad or almost never. I know, I know, there is no such thing as playing too much. Very true. However, we can fall into the dual traps of playing one game too much, continuing long after we have wrung everything of value from a system, or too shallowly, only catching glimpses of the unique delights a game has to offer. While recently perusing my far-too-small game collection (I doubt I have even 1000 games), I noted more than a few with which I wish I had spent more time. Thankfully, and I do mean full […]
