  • Do Not Let Us Die In The Dark Night Of This Cold Winter (system agnostic) All right, and now for something COMPLETELY different! I’ve had this book for about 2 years by now; I purchased it on a whim, and then never got around to using or reviewing it; there always was something else up, some deadline approaching. So, at long last, let us take a look at this?   “Do Not Let Us Die In The Dark Night Of This Cold Winter” (“Cold Winter” for convenience’s sake below), in its essence, is a survival game of resource-management; it can be played as a stand-alone mini-game, and it can be inserted into pretty much any roleplaying game, though its aesthetics […]

  • Preview: Winter’s Daughter (5e/OSR) NOTE: This is not a review in the traditional sense – it is a developer’s commentary, a preview of sorts. I try to be as SPOILER-free as possible below, but I do mention some themes and design paradigms employed.   So, I worked on the latest Dolmenwood adventure, “Winter’s Daughter“ – an adventure, originally penned for the B/X-rules by Gavin Norman. In the original iteration, it clocks in at 24 pages, and I converted it to 5e, which extended the page-count to 36 pages. Why the page-count discrepancy? Well, let me explain!   First of all, “Winter’s Daughter” is an introductory adventure for Dolmenwood, and as such, it does introduce players to several of the leitmotifs […]

  • World-Quest of the Winter Calender (DCC) This massive adventure clocks in at 56 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page SRD, 1 page back cover, leaving us with an impressive 52 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   This review is part of a request of one of my patreon supporters.   Now, first of all: This adventure is unlike any other I’ve reviewed so far; it genuinely managed to evoke a sense of jamais-vu, which is a rare thing for me these days. It should be noted that a portion of the proceeds from selling this adventure will be donated to a charity focusing on technology education for rural, Latino youth. Formally, this is […]

  • The Long Night of Winter – Winter’s Teeth The series “The Long Night of Winter” was conceived as supplemental material/optional tie-ins for the massive Northlands Saga, but each of the modules can be run as a stand-alone module as well. I backed the kickstarter for Northlands Saga back in the day, but otherwise was not involved in this project.   This module is intended for levels 6- 8 and is set in the eponymous Northlands of Frog God Games’ Lost Lands campaign setting. It does translate well to other fantasy campaign settings, though. Minus editorial etc., we are left with 13 pages here, just fyi.   This being an adventure-module, the following contains SPOILERS. Potential players should jump to the […]

  • Don’t Walk in Winter Wood This game clocks in at 46 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 3 pages of credits/thanks/reference, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 40 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   So, what is this? The simple answer would be that this is a cooperative, narrative, rules-light HORROR game set in a vaguely colonial setting in the United States. Society is one of rough and closely-knit, often isolated communities. Superstitions run wild and even well-meant belief may seem barbarous to us. Transportation is still mainly defined by equestrian means and print books are rare and expensive. AT night, it is still candles that are used to pierce the dark. Against said […]

  • Frozen Gardens: Deadly Gardens Winter Special The second of Rusted Iron Games’ extra-long specials in the Deadly Gardens-series clocks in at 12 pages, 1 page front cover, ~1/2 a page editorial + SRD, leaving us with ~11.5 pages of content, so let’s take a look!   Okay, so this pdf begins somewhat different than one would expect, introducing us first to the realm of eternal winter, a demi-plane of eternal ice…and otherwise sans unique planar traits, which is a bit of a missed chance there. The pdf provides two magic items – the first is the Cask of Ancient Winters, which, when opened, spreads lethal cold and enhances associated magic, while the second is Winter’s Edge, a frosty short sword […]

  • Adventure Path Iconics: Path of Winter This installment of LPJr Design’s series of pregens for APs is 28 pages long, 1 page front cover, 1 page SRD, leaving 26 pages of content, so let’s take a look, shall we?   The pdf kicks off with an introduction that explains synonymous use of terms (to respect Paizo IP) as well as the basic concept of the line – 8 Pregens, 4 of which are human, whereas 4 belong to the rather uncommon races from LPJr Design’s own NeoExodus campaign setting. These, btw., should you require their details, can by now be found on d20pfsrd.com’s shop. Point-buy-wise, the characters are 20-point-characters, but each of them offers information on how to scale them […]
