Untethered Unlock iOS 4.2.1 imminent

ORIGINALLY POSTED 25 JANUARY 2011

Release of jailbreak / unlock for untethered 4.2.1 for iPhone, iPod, and iPad is imminent

Untethered jailbreaks or unlocks have been utilized for years now and many have come to rely on an unlock after a new iOS release.  With the new iOS 4.2.1, many iDevice users upgraded to obtain the great new features; Especially on the iPad which previously did not have folders and many of the options now available with iOS 4.2.1.  I am one of these users and have impatiently awaited the completion of the latest unlock by Dev-Team so I can get back into Cydia and unlock the full potential of my device and pry Apple’s tight virtual fingers off my phone so that I may use it as I please.

There are currently jailbreak / unlocks for iOS 4.2.1, but they are all “tethered” meaning that if your phone dies you lose all modifications and must reapply the jailbreak.  Since this sounds like a gigantic pain in the ass to us here at NERD TREK we have opted for awaiting the release of the final 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak.

The last trustworthy exploit was the jailbreakme.com iteration which simply required users to visit a web site and click 2 virtual buttons to open up the majority of Apple’s portable gadgets to exploits.  DEV-TEAM is currently working on RedSn0w 0.9.7 which will allow all iOS devices running 4.2.1 to be hacked using files retrieved from previous installs.  Nicknamed “Monte”, the latest unlock is still in the works, but the latest buzz is that DEV-TEAM hacker MuscleNerd has concluded that the same release will be a simple port once Apple has released iOS 4.3 which is coming out in a month or two.  Thanks to a recently discovered bootrom exploit, the current generation of jailbreaks will be permanent and cannot be removed by a firmware updated forced by Apple.  That almost sounds too good to be true.

You can count on NERD TREK to be ready with information on how to unlock your phone along with all the neccessary links as soon as the unlock becomes available so add us as a friend on Facebook and keep watching our status updates until that glorious day arrives!
