US Military unveils new smart gun

ORIGINALLY POSTED 30 NOVEMBER 2010

The US military has unveiled a new gun that will assist in it’s efforts against terrorists in the war in Afghanistan.  The XM-25 has been called a ‘game changer’ by the US Army.  Using a laser guidance system, 25mm high explosive rounds can be programmed to detonate directly over a target even if the target is hiding behind a wall.

This technology was developed specifically by Richard Audette for the US military.  “The way a soldier operates this is basically find your target, then laze (laser) to it, which gives the range, then you get an adjusted aim point, adjust the fire and pull the trigger.  “Say you’ve lazed out to 543 metres… When you pull the trigger it arms the round and fires it 543 metres plus or minus one, two or three metres.”  The XM-25 has already been placed in the hands of US soilders in Afghanistan.  The gun can be used to target insurgents hiding in ditches, and behind walls and vehicles.  “That makes it a full solution control weapon.”  This is the first smart gun to be developed and used by the US military.
